Did you obtain your commercial learners permit before February 7, 2022?
Having a learners permit before February 7, 2022, will exempt you from Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) until your permit expires.
Beginning February 7, 2022, drivers who are seeking certain commercial privileges for the first time, or seeking certain CDL upgrades, must complete ELDT with an approved training provider prior to taking the corresponding skills test.
ELDT is required for drivers seeking to:
- Obtain a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time.
- Upgrade an existing Class B CDL to a Class A CDL
- Upgrade an existing Class C CDL to a Class A or Class B CDL
Learner’s permit requirements
Testing required for Class A CDL: General knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicle.
Testing required for Class B CDL: General Knowledge and air brakes.
ELDT requirements
Once you have passed the required computer tests, you must purchase a commercial learner permit and have one year to complete the Pre-Trip Inspection, Skills, and Road Test.
There are three parts to ELDT
Theory: Online course or classroom time. There are many online sites that offer theory training for ELDT. You must complete the course and score 80% or higher on your tests. There are a few companies that offer this training in person but do not meet federal standards. Failure to meet federal standards of completion can result in the loss of your CDL in the future. It is highly recommended that you complete the theory portion online.
Range: Backing/parking. You must complete 5 backing maneuvers to pass the range portion of ELDT. Straight line, offset, alley dock, and parallel parking (right and left sides). We will practice all the maneuvers until you show proficiency. You must have some prior experience backing up trailers. If you need extra time to practice, let us know ahead of time so we can accommodate you.
Road: Driving. Once a full pre-trip inspection has been done on the vehicle, we will hop in the truck and begin driving. The amount of time it takes to pass the road portion of ELDT is up to you. There are several areas in which you must show proficiency. We will drive the Ankeny DOT drive route at least twice to make sure you are fully prepared. As of now, we only have manual transmission trucks. You must have some experience shifting manual transmissions, even if it has been in a car.
Give us a call when you have purchased a commercial learner permit and we will schedule an appointment for the use of our truck and assistance.
